A neurosurgeon operates on the brain, spine and nerves: slipped discs, neck and spinal cord problems, brain and spinal tumors, aneurysms, hydrocephalus, head and spine injuries, and nerve pain such as trigeminal neuralgia. Many patients seen by a neurosurgeon do not need an operation.
Neurologist or neurosurgeon: whom should I see first?
A neurologist treats nervous system diseases with medicines (for example epilepsy, migraine, stroke, Parkinson's). A neurosurgeon treats conditions that may need an operation.
