In most patients a small artery presses on the trigeminal nerve where it leaves the brainstem. Occasionally a small tumor causes the same pain, which is why an MRI is essential. Dr. Zico has also removed small tumors presenting with trigeminal neuralgia-like pain.

How Dr. Zico treats it

In MVD a small opening is made behind the ear and a soft pad is placed between the artery and the nerve under the microscope. The nerve is not cut, so face sensation is kept.

Trigeminal neuralgia treatment starts with medicines. Microvascular decompression surgery is the main operation for patients whose pain is no longer controlled.
